How much do you pay for dishwasher detergent? Last time I checked it's not exactly cheap, am I right? Up until now, I would grin and bear it and buy the big box or jug of chemical detergent because I thought it was the only option. I was wrong! And I am very glad that I was. I have slowly been transforming my household into a chemical free home one product at a time. That is why I am very excited to kick another chemical cleaner to the curb and replace it with these easy, cost effective, chemical free gems! Not only are they easy to make, but they actually work! If you're anything like me, you find DIY projects rewarding and fun, so it doesn't feel like extra work, it feels like an investment in the well-being of your home and family!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 1/2 cup course salt

  • 1/4 cup citric acid

  • 1 Tbsp Thieves All Purpose Cleaner ( you can get yours here)

You may not have citric acid kicking around the house (I know I didn't!) It is an all natural organic acid that is derived from citrus fruits. The kind I am using is labelled as NON-GMO, approved for use in organic foods, a safe cleaning agent, and tough on grease. You can purchase a 10lb or 5lb bag of your own from the links below. Keep in mind that a little goes a long way...

Directions:

  1. Mix the dry ingredients in a stainless steel bowl with a whisk.

  2. Add your Thieves cleaner 1 tsp at a time until the mixture holds its form when handled. I used the full 1 Tbsp but you may not need to.

  3. Pack the mixture into your ice cube trays and leave them to dry for as long as you can stand to wait! (I was impatient and popped mine out of the tray after a couple hours! Thankfully they were just fine and held their shape).

  4. Store in a glass container.

They can also double as a toilet bowl cleaner! Gotta love multifaceted products :)
